Evaluate Your Heart Health in February

In 1937 Dr. Royal Lee introduced the Endocardigraph which could evaluate the rate, rhythm, and tone of the heart muscle from a nutritional standpoint. This technology is now available in digital form, allowing heart sounds to be graphed via computer and saved. This allows also for follow-up tests and comparisons after implementing nutritional changes.

Read more about the rate, rhythm and tone of the heart here.

We will be offering In-Office Heart Sound Recorder Testing on Tuesday, February 21st from 10:00AM – 2:00 PM. The test is non-invasive, easy, and only takes about 15 minutes. At the end of the test we will be able to make recommendations for any nutrition changes and/or supplements to improve the rate, rhythm and tone of your heart muscle. Please contact the office for more information or to schedule a time.

Learning More About Why Pain Is Reduced Following Spinal Adjustments

It is well established that chiropractic helps decrease pain levels in the body. In this study, The Role of the Descending Inhibitory Pain Mechanism in Musculoskeletal Pain Following High-Velocity, Low Amplitude Thrust Manipulation A Review of the Literature, authors see that the adjustments initiate changes traveling up the spinal cord to effect the brain. Dr. Dan Murphy summarizes it nicely:

The key message from this study is that the pain reduction noted immediately after being adjusted is not primarily attributed to biochemistry/neurology changes at the adjusted joint, but rather are primarily attributed to activating the supra-segmental descending pain inhibitory control system, which involves the periaqueductal gray matter of the mesencephalon.

This is very important because it is established that the periaqueductal gray is itself influenced by the hypothalamus. This adds to the evidence for explaining how spinal adjusting can influence a number of aspects of systemic physiology, as the hypothalamus controls whole body homeostasis, the pituitary gland, and the autonomic nervous system.

The Minimalists Podcast

As the holiday season winds down, many people find themselves overwhelmed by the consumerism and all the physical “stuff” that accompanies it. If you are seeking to step away from some ‘stuff’ to find a more meaningful lifestyle in 2017, consider listening to the The Minimalists Podcast.

According the the founders Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus, “Minimalism is a lifestyle that helps people question what things add value to their lives. By clearing the clutter from life’s path, we can all make room for the most important aspects of life: health, relationships, passion, growth and contribution”. Through the podcast Joshua and Ryan help people with the process of working towards a minimalist lifestyle and share the successes and challenges they have experienced.

You can find the podcast on your favorite podcast app or listen on your computer here.

The Benefits of Controlled Breathing

For hundreds of years yoga practitioners have preached the importance of controlled breathing for help with concentration and vitality.  Now scientific studies prove the importance of deep breathing, saying it also can help reduce symptoms from insomnia, PTSD, depression, and anxiety.

Controlled breathing is consciously changing the way you breathe by paying attention to the length of your inhaling and exhaling. This article from the New York Times shares information about several studies recently completed on controlled breathing. Dr. Richard Brown, author of “The Healing Power of the Breath” says taking long deep breaths activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which signals your brain to calm down.

The article also shares three different methods of controlled breathing to help with stress release and to re energize during a mid-afternoon slump.

What Egg Labels Really Mean

Not all eggs are created equal and often the labels on egg cartons are confusing and misleading. In her quest to eat real food, blogger Lisa Leake, researched how to find the best eggs and what the labels on eggs mean.  Ultimately, pastured eggs from chickens with access to both grains and grass have the most nutrition and taste the best.  Those can most likely be found at farmers markets as opposed to chain grocery stores. If a farmers market isn’t an option, her article can help you make the best decision on what types of egg to buy at the grocery store.
