PET Scan Changes in the Brain  after Chiropractic

I am always excited to see more research that shows the ways chiropractic adjustments help the body function better. A recent study in Japan used PET technology to look at neuron activity in the brain and muscles.

The article is titled Glucose Metabolic Changes in the Brain and Muscles of Patients with Nonspecific Neck Pain Treated by Spinal Manipulation Therapy. Twenty-one men received a PET (positron emission tomography) scan after getting Spinal Manipulation Therapy (SMT, also known as adjustments).

Key points of the study include:

  • Brain processing after adjustments leads to physiological relaxation via a decrease in sympathetic nerve activity. Decreasing sympathetic tone has major positive impacts on systemic wellness including immune function.
  • The PET scan after adjustments also showed direct changes in the brain, including reduction of pain, normalizing muscle tone, improved range of motion.

Walk-ins and Same Day Appointment Scheduling

Many of you have been coming to see us for chiropractic care for years now. I am very grateful for all of you. This month marks my ninth year of practice in Cincinnati!

While the practice has grown over the years, we still reserve time in the schedule each day for people to call in with urgent or unexpected needs for adjustments.  We also limit the number of new patients we can accept each day specifically to leave room for all of you existing clients as a priority.

With that said, we encourage you to call early in the day if you need a same day appointment so you can have the best selection, or better yet, set an appointment in advance. While we still are happy to accept walk-ins, your wait times may be longer now than at times years ago. On some occasions, we have been too full to take walk-ins. Thank you for understanding!

Tony Robbins Podcast featuring Deepak Chopra

On his podcast, Tony Robbins had an in-depth and fascinating conversation with Dr. Deepak Chopra on topics of health and the mind-body connection.  Dr. Chopra discussed how changing your perception and becoming more aware of how your body processes experiences can change both your life and your health.  You can listen to the entire podcast on Robbins’s website.

Rethinking Your Posture and Movement

We often blame poor posture for our aches and pains. Predominant thought is, if you fix your posture, you will feel better. We may not be looking at this issue in the best way.

Some of you met my friend Chandler Stevens, a movement expert, when he taught some classes at Thrive a couple years ago. Chandler Stevens writes that, “your poor posture is a symptom, but it isn’t the cause”. In his article “Your Posture Isn’t the Problem” Stevens says humans are always moving and therefore posture is not static. Because posture is not static, it can’t be good or bad.  The problem starts when you can no longer move your body out of those “bad posture” positions.

In order to fix posture issues Steven’s suggests we examine our habits of movement in daily life. For example, could we add variety to the tasks that we do? Could we sit on the floor instead of a chair sometimes? Could we stand instead of sit? Can we build in ‘movement’ throughout our days instead of (or in addition to) isolating 45 minutes at the gym to workout once a day?

In his article “Forget Fitness: Do Human Things”, Stevens suggests that people spend too much time doing short bouts of exercises instead of constantly moving the way our ancestors did.

If you are looking for a new perspective on movement, posture and fitness, check out Chandler’s articles and website.
