Chiropractic Studies: Healthy Brain and Bones
Keep Healthy Brain Tissue
The March 3, 1994 issue of New England Journal of Medicine, Stewart Lipton showed that an increased amount of glutamate in the brain is the primary cause of neuro-degeneration because glutamate destroys neurons. In order to pump the glutamate into the astrocyte cells so it can be removed from the body, there must be adequate ATP pumps and ATP. Therefore, increased amounts of ATP will help stop and reduce neuro-degenerations.
The Nov-Dec 2011 Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine study shows that the chiropractic adjustment increases blood flow, oxygen utilization and ATP production.
Stop and Prevent Bone Degeneration
This study from the Journal of Clinical Biomechanics shows that immobilization is a factor in bone degeneration causing osteoarthritis. Regular chiropractic adjustments help prevent immobilization and bone degeneration from occurring.
above video (4:07), Tony Robbins shares his ten minute morning routine to start the day with gratitude and intention. (Yes, we know Tony recently made news for some seminar participants' injuries during a firewalk.)
In past newsletters, we have promoted the benefits of meditation. Tony's routine can be used alone or combined with meditation.
Essentially, he adds gratitude, intention and visualization as powerful tools to begin the day.
The Birth of the Opioid Crisis and Alternatives
Twenty years ago Purdue Pharmaceuticals announced a new wonder drug that promised to keep patients pain free for 12 hours. Until then, no other painkillers would last that long. This drug, OxyContin, quickly became the best selling pain medication in the U.S. partly due to Purdue Pharmaceuticals heavy marketing to physicians.
As this article from the LA Times and the above video (2:27) show, OxyContin did not turn out to be wonder-dug Purdue Pharmaceuticals claimed. Instead, of lasting 12 hours, it worked for significantly shorter periods of time. When the medication ran out it caused patients both painful withdrawal symptoms on top of their original pain. This lead to 7 million Americans abusing OxyContin and the drug is now a big part of the current opioid addiction epidemic.
As a chiropractor, I prefer drugless solutions whenever possible and it is well known that chiropractic care helps relieve a wide variety of pain.
Yet, there are occasions, such as after surgery, when medications are needed. I am pleased that two of my friends from Crossfit, Dr. Glenn Waters and Dr. Timothy McConnell, invented a protocol using over-the-counter pain medicines like Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen instead of opioids. Using this protocol, the surgeons found a 70.4% reduction in prescribed opioids.
